Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about performance, indexing, and installation.

How does Finder compare to Raycast, Everything, or Flow Launcher?

Everything / Voidtools: Finder uses similar direct MFT/USN Journal technology, but combines it with a modern launcher HUD, app launcher, calculator, path resolver, and direct web query engine out-of-the-box without requiring external plugins.

Raycast & Fluent Search: Raycast and Electron-based launchers often consume 500MB-600MB RAM and require ~200MB installer downloads. Finder is built in Rust/Tauri with an installer ~3 MB, runs on 150 – 250 MB RAM, requires no accounts or login, and indexes 3M+ files in ~40 seconds.

Why does Finder request Administrator permissions on the first run?

Reading the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) and subscribing to real-time USN Journal updates directly from disk sectors requires administrator rights on Windows. This enables Finder to index 3 million files in under 45 seconds.

Fallback: If you decline administrator permissions, Finder still works by falling back to standard user-level disk scanning.

Why is Windows SmartScreen / Defender showing an unrecognized app alert?

Finder is newly released, meaning Microsoft SmartScreen has not accumulated download reputation for this specific binary hash yet. To launch: click "More info" and select "Run anyway".

The code is completely clean, and a package submission PR is active on the official Windows Package Manager (WinGet) and Microsoft Security Intelligence repository.

How much cache disk space and RAM does Finder use?

Finder compiles index information into a compact binary format (finder_cache.bin). For a drive with 3 million files, the cache occupies only 28 MB to 45 MB of disk space. RAM usage typically rests between 150 MB and 250 MB depending on preview caches. Warm startups load the entire cache in under 1 second.

Can I customize hotkeys, accent colors, and UI layout?

Yes. The default shortcut is Ctrl+Space, but can be changed to Alt+Space or custom keys in settings. You can also customize accent colors, adjust corner radii, toggle background acrylic blur, and enable or hide file previews.

Does Finder send my file names or search history to external servers?

No. Finder operates 100% locally and offline. Your file names, folder paths, and calculations never leave your machine. The only network call made is when you explicitly prefix a query with @ to launch a web search.
